- A part of Thorin’s last words, The Hobbit, The Return Journey

“I go now to the halls of waiting to sit beside my fathers, until the world is renewed. Since I leave now all gold and silver, and go where it is of little worth, I wish to part in friendship from you, and I would take back my words and deeds at the Gate.”
- To Bilbo

I quite like this in sepia tone!

This is part of a personal project on the relationship between Heavy Metal and Tolkien. I’m focusing on 46 (and I’m sure there’s many more) metal bands who reference Tolkien, and I’m simply drawing members of said bands as characters in Tolkien’s Universe. Not that conceptually amazing, but fun nonetheless. It’s an ongoing project, so they’ll show up here every once in a while.

Here is Marco Hietala (of Nightwish, Tarot, Northern Kings etc.) as Beorn.

Shit this is cool!

Oh shit you guys I’m super pumped for the upcoming “Hobbit” movies. Mr. Armitage looks like he’ll be an incredible Thorin Oakenshield, and Martin Freeman is perfect for little Bilbo! So I just had to draw them both.

In the book, these two characters go through some great character chemistry. Thorin starts off thinking Bilbo’s an annoyance and good for nothing, but begins to respect and even admire the little fellow as Bilbo proves his worth as a great burglar. Then some great twists happen, and some more, and BOY am I excited for the movie!!

If you want to zoom in more than tumblr can, go here: http://phuzface1.deviantart.com/#/d4tbqgk

That’s one of the relationships I’m really keen to see explored in the movies: Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyen brought such complexity to the Smeagol/Gollum partnership that I can’t wait to see what they do with Thorin and Bilbo.

It’s by far and away the most complex and devastating relationship in the whole story: their gradual respect built up over months of shared adversity, which is then shattered by greed, and ultimately redeemed…but at a horrible price.

Gloin and his unnamed wife (and baby Gimli). Totally did this with Ask-Gloin in mind!

So I obviously love the dwarves. And I’m so intrigued by Dwarf women and children. I know it’s supposedly common knowledge that the Dwarves valued “riches” above anything, BUT THEY DIDN’T. They valued their wives and their babies and their heritage more than any gold. Dwarf women made up less than a 1/3 of the dwarf population, so marriage was rare, as was procreation, hence the dying of their race. It makes my heart cry to think of how much they celebrated a new marriage or the birth of a child. Oh Dwarves, why you gotta be so secretive?!

Just try to tell me she’s not gorgeous!

Thorin’s Company. Everyone else can be an elf, I will die a dwarf. I am completely enamored with Tolkien’s Dwarves, or any dwarf really… Hands down my favorite subject to draw.

I was doing this project right as Peter Jackson was releasing the photos of the dwarves, I managed to avoid seeing any since I didn’t want the influence…Until I saw Dwalin (my favorite of the company) and I had to give him similar tattoos. I loved his character design. Anyway, I tried to maintain some similarity in appearance to the Dwarves that are closely related. Those swatches of color represent the color of their cloaks.
